Erectile dysfunction can be stated as a health condition where in a man faces inability to sustain a proper erection which is required for satisfactory sexual activity. The occurrence of erectile dysfunction can happen at any time, age is not a constraint for this health condition. Erectile dysfunction can be complete, chronic and brief. With this condition a man can experience an inability to achieve an erection, inconsistent ability in doing the same or only able to have brief erections.
The procedure which leads to an erection:
The erectile organ consists of two chambers called corpora cavernosa which cover the length of the organ. The chamber consists of spongy tissues which are surrounded by a membrane called tunica albuginea. Urethra which is a channel for the urine to pass runs under the corpora cavernosa. Erection comes along with mental stimulation. Muscles which are situated in the corpora cavernosa start relaxing when impulses are reached from brain to local nerves which allow blood flow and helps to attain an erection.

The occurrence of this disorder starts increasing with age. The factors which lead to the occurrence of erectile dysfunction are-
The factors which cause ED can be divided into two main categories which are: physical and psychological causes. The main reason as to why erectile dysfunction occurs is the reduced flow of blood in the erectile organ and nerve damage.
Vascular disease: arteriosclerosis which involves the hardening and the narrowing of arteries causes a reduced flow of blood throughout the body which in turn can result in impotence or ED.
Diabetes mellitus: when there are extremely high levels of blood sugar which is directly associated with diabetes cause the damage of small blood vessels and nerves which are present throughout the body.
Drugs: drugs meant for high blood pressure, heart medications, antidepressants, tranquilizers and sedatives have chances of causing impotence. Erectile dysfunction can also be caused with the intake of illicit drugs and long term use of alcohol.
Peyronie’s disease: the occurrence of this inflammatory condition causes the scarring of the erectile tissue. Interference may take place within the sexual function as scarring results in curvature of the erectile organ.
Depression:
Guilt, worry, stress and anxiety can result in the loss of libido. If these internal thoughts of worry and anxiety continue it can result in erectile dysfunction or impotence.
